Common agricultural chemicals include fuels, solvents, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilisers. 

Any chemical should be treated with extreme caution and only ever used according to the instructions. Vapours or direct exposure can lead to a variety of acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) health effects. 

Recent studies have shown that genetically modifying plants (an unnatural process that works against the natural ebb and flow of genetic movement) may be detrimental to human health. 

For example, an early study on GMO crops showed that corn pollen was adversely affecting monarch butterfly caterpillars, causing higher mortality rates in the butterflies that had eaten the GM pollen.

Meeting and talking to farmers and food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced. 

Organic farming can be defined as a system of management and agricultural production that combines a high level of biodiversity with environmental practices that preserve natural resources and has rigorous standards for animal welfare.

 In organic farming, pesticides and fertilizers must be of “natural origin”, i.e., they must be products that can be found in natural materials, such as mineral copper sulfate. However, in conventional agriculture, they can be synthetic, i.e., manufactured in laboratories.

An additional factor that may contribute to drug resistance in humans is the overuse of antibiotics in farming and agriculture.

Using antibiotics in animals may raise the risk of transmitting drug-resistant bacteria to humans either by direct infection or by transferring “resistance genes from agriculture into human pathogens,”

The number of farmers growing organically cultivated foodstuffs is increasing, and according to the regulations for organic farming, the use of hormones and antibiotics is limited.
